Is breast cancer preventable?

Is breast cancer preventable?

Unfortunately, no cancer is 100% preventable, including breast cancer. However, some factors can reduce the likelihood of developing cancer. Other factors may increase one's risk for cancer.

Unavoidable factors that increase the risk of breast cancer

Some risks for breast cancer are unavoidable. These include:

  • Being female. While men can get breast cancer, most people with breast cancer are women.

  • Getting older. Most cases of breast cancer are in women 55 years or older.

  • Inheriting certain genes. Mutations in genes such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 lead to abnormal cell growth, characteristic of cancer.

  • Family history. Women with a first-degree relative who has or had breast cancer are twice as likely to develop this type of cancer.

  • Dense breast tissue. More breast tissue means more glandular tissue, which is where breast cancer primarily develops.

While some risk factors are beyond your control, there are steps you can take to protect your health.

What can I do to lower my risk?

Cancer risk can be reduced by being proactive. Some actions that lower the risk of developing breast cancer include:

  • Avoiding weight gain. The National Cancer Institute reports that excess weight and obesity following menopause can increase the risk of developing breast cancer. It can also worsen the outcomes after diagnosis, no matter the woman’s age.

  • Staying active. Engaging in moderate physical activity, such as brisk walking, for at least 30 minutes most days of the week can help lower your cancer risk.

  • Keeping a healthy diet. Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole foods, while limiting red meats and processed foods, may help lower your risk of cancer.

  • Limiting alcohol. Alcohol is a known carcinogen and has been heavily linked to cancer.

  • Not Smoking. Multiple studies have found that smoking increases the risk of developing cancer.

  • Breastfeeding, if possible. Many studies have shown that women who breastfeed their children are less likely to develop breast cancer.

While breast cancer may not be completely preventable, there are some actions you can take to reduce your risk. Early detection saves lives. If you're due for a screening, don’t wait — schedule your mammogram today!
